Born in 1945, Tom Fazio has been classified as a world-class golf course architect and possibly the greatest living golf architect. After graduating in 1962 from Lansdale Catholic High School, where he would eventually be a part of the high school's hall of fame, he began his career in golf course design at his family's firm in the 1960s. Eventually, he established his own firm in Florida in 1972.
Over the course of his career, Fazio has designed 120 courses and currently has more courses ranking in the top 100 of golf courses in the United States than anyone else in golf course design. He has earned such honors as Best Modern Day Golf Course Architect from Golf Digest Magazine three times, the Old Tom Morris Award from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and he currently has more credits in Golf Digest's list of the 100 greatest golf courses than anyone else alive.
There are two courses in Myrtle Beach that hold the signature of Fazio. The first is the Barefoot Resort's Fazio Course, which is designed in a European style and is filled with natural areas, native grasses and live oaks. Lakes and trees area part of the landscape rather than separate from it so that players can enjoy the beauty of the course while they are challenged by it as well.
The other course is the TPC of Myrtle Beach, which is situated in rustic wetlands and has been designed to test the skill of players from beginner to professional. Golf Digest and Golf Magazine both ranked this course as one of the best courses in the United States, and it has become the permanent home of the Senior PGA Tour Championship. Some have called this golf course the ultimate golf experience of the Grand Strand.
Perhaps no man has done more for golf course design than Fazio in the past 40 years. There may be no other golf course designer alive today who has been able to have as much as an impact on the game of golf as Fazio. To play a Fazio golf course in Myrtle Beach is to play a game of golf on nothing short of heaven.
