In his 50s, Cate is not known around the world of golf architecture as much as his contemporaries are. However, if you mention Cate's name in North or South Carolina, and especially in Myrtle Beach, you will get nods of approval at a man who has created four of the best golf courses that Myrtle Beach has to offer.
After graduating with a degree in Landscaping Architecture in 1984 from the University of Georgia, Cate set about to create golf courses using the philosophy that every golf course should be designed with the highest standards possible so that the golfers can experience the best golf game as they can. After becoming interested in golf course design while working at the Sea Palms Golf and Tennis Resort in Georgia, he would go on to work with Edward Pinckney and the legendary Willard C. Byrd on several golf projects before moving on to create his own golf architecture firm, Tim Cate Designs, in 1992.
All the courses he has designed, especially the four in Myrtle Beach, have been described as some of the top golf courses not only on the east coast, but across the country as well.
Leopards Chase Golf Club is a par 72 course that has rapid elevation changes, excellent landing areas and a varied terrain that is a Tim Cate signature. A very enjoyable course to play, it is a must-try when you are golfing in Myrtle Beach.
Panther's Run was created with the expressed desire to be a unique challenge for golfers. With steep elevation gains, it has been described as a gem of a course where strategy is key. Only careful shots can keep golfers from sending their ball into the nature preserve, and that makes this one of the most visually engaging courses on the Grand Strand.
Thistle Golf Club is a 27-hole golf course that was created on a beautiful piece of land that blends natural elevation and wetlands, along with carved bunkers and large greens to create a course that is visually stunning to play.
Tiger's Eye Golf Links is the crown jewel of the Ocean Ridge Plantation. An upscale 18-hole golf course amid virgin pine and hardwood trees, this course has a unique personality attached to each hole. Of all the Tim Cate courses in Myrtle Beach, this is the course that you must try above all others. A challenge for golfers, but a delight for those who love the game and nature, it has something for everyone.
